Knúkur highest mountain on Mykines, Faroe Islands
Mykines has two valleys, Borgardalur and Kálvadalur, the valleys are between steep mountainsides, one of which has the highest mountain peak: Knúkur. The peak is located 560 meters over the sea.
On 26th of September 1970 a plane got lost on the way to Vágar airport, and crashed into the foggy mountain Knúkur. 34 passengers were on board the aircraft when it crashed. After realizing what had happened, the people in the village acted quickly. Those able to run up and help did, and one by one the survivors were carried down to the village. 8 people died in the crash.
A stone monument is located in Mykines church that commemorates the accident.
A guide is required in order to hike in the mountains of Mykines. Hiking to Knúkur is relatively easy and takes 4 hours.
NB: A certified guide is mandatory when traveling beyond the village of Mykines.
