Sørvágsvatn / Leitisvatn Biggest Lake in Faroe Islands (Lake Above the Ocean)
At 3.4 square kilometers, the fresh water lake Sørvágsvatn/Leitisvatn is the largest in the Faroe Islands. The lake has also been dubbed “the lake above the ocean” as the view from a particular angle functions as an optical illusion, appearing to look as though the lake is hovering directly above the ocean. At the end of the lake is the impressive Bøsdalafossur waterfall.
At the end of Leitisvatn / Sørvágsvatn there are a lot of great sightseeing opportunities. The view is amazing there you can see:
Trælanípa, the peculiar cliff that has a gloomy story attached to it
Bøsdalafossur, the 30m high waterfall flowing directly into the Atlantic Ocean
Geitisskoradrangar, the beautiful sea stack
The lake above the sea – and don’t forget the viewpoint for the optical illusion where Leitisvatn / Sørvágsvatn looks like it is floating high above the sea.
