Sørvágur

The village Sørvágur has about 1.150 inhabitants. The village is considered one of the oldest settlements on the Faroe Islands. During the preparation to build the schools gymnastics hall they came across an old Viking settlement built during the first 100-150 years after the Faroese Landnám in 825.

During World War II Sørvágur was home to the British Royal Engineers, who lived at Uppi á Mýruni. They built the main infrastructure in Sørvágur including Vágar Airport, the harbour in Sørvágur, the road to the harbour called Niðaraveg with the stone wall facing the fiord and several bridges. To accomplish this they had to move entire houses to other locations.

The village is also the gateway to Mykines, which is a very popular destination.
