A talk about the meeting between art and science

How can we possibly understand the history of the world and the climate when it spans over billions of years – far beyond the time of experience and imagination of man? 
Literary scholar Guðrun í Jákupsstovu and visual artist Maja Friis from Visual Science will talk about the role of art in the presentation of climate, landscape and time.
Through research, literary practices and concrete landscapes they investigate the possibilities of art to give us new perspectives on climate change; how images, narratives, movies, and other aesthetic experiences can clarify complex scientific issues – and how the introduction of art can add new knowledge to science.
The event includes film clips from Visual Science’s artistic collaboration with ice core scientists from the Institute of Niels Bohr, and a recitation by Faroese writer Lív Maria Lív Maria Róadóttir Jæger from Wicked FYSIKK - about beginnings, becomings, body and pop, and about connections that cross time.
Participants
Guðrun í Jákupsstovu has a Ph.D. in literature science from the University of Bern and is a lecturer at the University of the Faroe Islands. Her research focuses on the understanding that literature has of the climate and landscape with special focus on the ocean and the coastal areas.
Maja Friis is a visual artist, instructor of documentaries and cofounder of Visual Science. In her cross-disciplinary collaborations with scientists and her audiovisual installations she investigates the crossing between art, science and climate.
Visual Science Studio is the artistic duo of Maja Friis and Sofie Mønster, who is a creative producer. Over the last few years, they have shown their work and have had exhibitions at e.g. CPH:DOX, Charlottenborg, BLOOM og Klimafolkemødet. Their exhibitions include Breathing Coral, Isens brydninger og Citater fra isen.
Lív Maria Róadóttir Jæger is a poet and has a Master of Arts degree in Philosophy from the University of Copenhagen. Presently she works on a practice-based  Ph.D. in the art of writing at the University of the Faroe Islands. She has published Mítt navn við hondskrift (My name in handwriting) (2014), Hvít sól (White Sun) (2015) and Eg skrivi á vátt pappír (I write on wet paper) (2020), and BóK (Book) (2025). Furthermore, she produces texts and performs as part of the art group Supervisjón along with sound artist Lasse Thorning Jæger.
