Church of Sandur
Ancient history
The church in Sandur was inaugurated in 1839 and is the 6th church on the same site. Each church has been built on top
of the other. Many excavations have been conducted nearby, showing signs of some of the oldest and best-preserved remains in the Faroe Islands. Some of the main findings are the remains of buildings from the early Viking days, articles for everyday use and ornaments dating back to the 8th century.
In 1863, the sexton found a coin treasure in the old graveyard - one of its kind in the Faroes. The treasure consisted of 98 silver coins – even from as far away as the Middle East. The treasure can now
be seen at the National Museum.
