The church was inaugurated June 1887

Sumba had plans to build a new church. In 1885, the pastor applied to the Church Fund to construct Sumba Church. A building committee, which included J.C. Evensen, was formed. They worked on deciding the materials. The walls were excavated, and the area was cleared. Johan Hypolitus Samuelsen led the work. Petur carried out the quarry work and got the materials from Tórshavn to Sumba. Andreas Jensen began carpentry work on July 8, 1886. The church was roofed with shingles and flags, and the tower was roofed with slate. It was consecrated on June 19, 1887.
