Klaksvíkar Róðrarfelag
A modern rowing boathouse and home of Klaksvíkar Róðrarfelag
On the waterfront by Biskupstorg stands the modern boathouse of Klaksvíkar Róðrarfelag. Designed by Henning Larsen Architects, the building provides state-of-the-art training facilities for rowers and their boats. Inspired by traditional Faroese boathouses, it is also a distinctive architectural addition to the Klaksvík waterfront.
Klaksvíkar Róðrarfelag is based here with several traditional Faroese racing boats. Rowing is the national sport of the Faroe Islands and an important part of the Faroese summer, when crews from around the country compete at festivals across the islands.
Traditionally, crews would take to the water for the first time after Flag Day on 25 April. Today, rowers train on rowing machines year-round and head out in the boats whenever conditions allow.
The boathouse is an active training facility rather than a visitor attraction, but visitors are welcome to admire the architecture from outside. If you happen to be there as a crew launches a boat, it is also a great opportunity to catch a glimpse of Faroese rowing culture in action.
