Autumn Concert with the Faroese Symphony Orchestra
Soloist: Antje Weithaas (DE)
The Faroese Symphony Orchestra welcomes one of the world's greatest violinists. Antje Weithaas received the 2025 OPUS Klassik award as Germany’s Instrumentalist of the Year.
Antje Weithaas is one of the leading musical personalities of our time. At a young age, she won major competitions and became known as an outstanding virtuoso. She soon performed with orchestras such as the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the BBC Symphony Orchestra, and Germany’s major radio orchestras.
What makes her one of the greatest violinists of our era, however, is the depth and purity of her artistic expression and her pursuit of perfection. With an impressive stage presence and a keen sense of nuance, she creates masterful and deeply personal interpretations of the great masterpieces.
She has released 30 recordings covering the most important violin concertos. Today, Antje Weithaas is regarded as one of the finest violinists Europe has produced.
Violin Concerto – Beethoven The famous Violin Concerto, which is also the only completed violin concerto written by Ludwig van Beethoven, was premiered in 1806 by the violinist Franz Clement. The premiere was not a success, and the work was not performed again until 1844, when the then-12-year-old prodigy Joseph Joachim performed it with the London Philharmonic Society under the direction of Felix Mendelssohn. Today, the Violin Concerto is world-renowned and performed throughout the world.
Symphony No. 60 – Joseph Haydn The music was originally written in 1774 for the comedy Le Distrait (The Absent-Minded Man) by the French playwright Jean-François Regnard. In 1775, Joseph Haydn adapted the music into his Symphony No. 60. One of the work’s distinctive features is that it consists of six movements, whereas a symphony normally has four.
Sound and Fury – Anna Clyne The work Sound and Fury is inspired by two great works: Haydn’s Symphony No. 60 and Macbeth by William Shakespeare. The Scottish Chamber Orchestra, Auditorium-Orchestre national de Lyon, and Hong Kong Sinfonietta jointly commissioned the work, and the Scottish Chamber Orchestra gave its world premiere in 2019 in Edinburgh. Anna Clyne was born in London in 1980 and wrote her first composition at the age of seven. She studied music at the University of Edinburgh and the Manhattan School of Music.
