Hvalba

A historic village surrounded by the dramatic nature of Suðuroy

Hvalba is a historic village in northern Suðuroy, surrounded by mountains, lakes and dramatic landscapes. It is one of the oldest villages in the Faroe Islands, with a rich history reflected in the surrounding landscape and local stories.

The village is particularly known for its coal mines. Suðuroy is the only island in the Faroe Islands where coal has been mined, and the industry played an important role in Hvalba for centuries. Today, one of the mines can be visited on a guided tour.

Hvalba is also a great starting point for exploring the surrounding nature, including the old village paths to Sandvík and Trongisvágur.
