Miðvágur
Miðvágur is a small village with about 1.100 inhabitants.
In Miðvágur you will find one of the oldest houses on the island of Vágar named Kálvalíð. The house was originally used to rehouse widows of priests from about year 1600 and thereafter.
Miðvágur has also been the home of the priests on the island for centuries, and has a lot of stories about such.
Due to the high number of British soldiers stationed here during World War 2, Miðvágur also has a separate cemetery where those who died while posted on the Faroe Islands were laid to rest.
Just across the road from the church there is a full size bronze statue of Mikkjal á Ryggi, standing on top of an open book made of stone. Phrases from his work are written on the book. The sculptor Hans Pauli Olsen built the statue and it is situated outside Mikkjal’s childhood home í Beitinum in Miðvágur. In 1909 Mikkjal á Ryggi, a young farmer's son at the time, carved a poem into a rock in the river of Hýsisá that can still be seen today.
