The Authors’ Quarter: Hanus Kamban

BÓKADAGAR 2026: Authors with New Books Read Aloud

Author Hanus Kamban reads from his book Úr høvundsins smiðju.
The Book In Úr høvundsins smiðju, the author has compiled a selection of his most interesting texts – essays, reflections, historical, political and artistic analyses, reviews, portraits and tributes – which he has written and published over the past half-century.
The book includes discussions of authors such as Sigurd Hoel, Thomas Mann, George Orwell and Arthur Koestler and, turning to the Faroe Islands, Durita Holm, Oddvør Johansen and Bergtóra Hanusardóttir. It also features portraits of singers and musicians such as Leonard Cohen and Bob Dylan, poets and playwrights such as Harold Pinter and, looking back to the 18th century, the poet, artist and enigmatic visionary William Blake.
A comprehensive historical analysis, divided into four parts, explains how Iran – originally known as Persia – was already on its way to becoming a democracy in the European sense in 1953, and how the United States put an end to this progress. In the lecture Carpe Diem, delivered at Føroya Studentaskúli in 2006, the topic is “The Humanities and Their Role in a Modern Education System”.
The work has three main themes: humanism, democracy and gender equality. The extensive index of names at the end of the book makes it easy for readers to look up individuals and topics.
The Authors’ Quarter is a series of reading events where members of the Faroese Writers’ Association, Rithøvundafelag Føroya, who have new books out, read from their recently published works.
